Temperatures on solar panels can exceed 140°F, even with ambient temperatures as low as 91°F as, seen in this thermal image above. At these temperatures, typical efficiency losses from the heat can reduce a panel's maximum rated power output by as much as 12% or more for some panels.

Keeping Cool with Water

Without cooling, solar panel equipment can even approach 150°F when air-cooling performance is degraded, like on the underside of this panel with ambient temperatures of 81°F. Placing solar arrays on bodies of water provides convenient passive-cooling of the equipment, in addition to other benefits that are under development by Lily Pad Power.
